SBS Impact Data Exceeds Expectations
We have seen firsthand how truly impactful Street Business School’s grassroots model is. As we visit and revisit our students, we have seen that our training impacts not only our courageous female students but also their families, their communities, and the environments in which they live. In our experience, women are the key to changing the world. Consequently, we want to amplify our impact by inviting organizations all over the world to empower women to become entrepreneurs. We have made it our goal to reach one l million women, woman-by-woman, training-by-training, each slum, city, one country at a time.
As part of our new expansion phase, we are measuring the results of our world class education program objectively. To date, our monitoring and evaluation data has exceeded our expectations, validating our transformational model:
BUSINESS CREATION – 2 years after graduating:
- 89% of graduates have one or more open businesses
- 43% of women have at least two businesses
- 16% have three or more businesses
THE WOMEN WE SERVE
62% of the women we serve are married. They range in age from 18 to 71, with the largest portion (39%) between 20 and 29 years of age. Overall, half the women served (55%) support 4 or more children.Women who were most successful at starting businesses over time were typically in their 20s and 30s, married and with 0 to 3 children. Conversely, women who were more successful at maintaining existing businesses were in their 40s and 50s, divorced or widowed and with 4 to 6 dependents.
COST EFFECTIVENESS
The average SBS participant is surviving on $1.35 a day when she enrolls – equaling about $491 per year. It costs us $346 to train her in business skills and provide mentoring to build her confidence. Two years after graduating, that $346 investment allows an average woman to earn $4.19/day or $1,528/year.

Surveys were done at baseline (n=152), after the 6 month intervention (n=125), and then again between 18 – 24 months after graduation (n = 101), each using a semi-structured questionnaire.
