Believe in GRIT: Proven Progress in 2022
11.14.2022
Dear Friends,
There’s a Ugandan phrase, “Sente Ye Kikazi,” that roughly translates as “a woman’s hard-earned money that she sets aside for her family’s future security.” Sente Ye Kikazi is a rainy day fund built through self-sacrifice and love that we know our 41,017 graduates are creating, thanks to the partnership of our incredible community of supporters.
We dug into the results of a 3-year long academic study on SBS to understand why our graduates are so successful. How were they able to continue building their rainy day funds when so many other people around the world continue to struggle? It turns out that the secret superpower of Street Business School grads like Esther is “GRIT.”
Grit measures a person’s perception of her ability to persevere, cope with setbacks and strive for improvements over time. Our researchers found that when women are trained in SBS, they score significantly higher in grit than the average entrepreneur. That’s why our grads thrive, experiencing increased business ownership, higher profits and doubled incomes from $2.47 to $4.82 per day on average.
Your gift will help us reach our goal of sharing SBS with 1 million women, increasing their grit. A gift made before the end of the year will be matched, dollar for dollar, doubling your impact and helping more women lift themselves and their families from poverty.
At Street Business School, we don’t believe in quick fixes. We believe in hard work, perseverance and resiliency. We believe in bookkeeping, business planning and market research. We believe in community, sisterhood and confidence. We believe in every woman’s potential to build a brighter future for herself and her family. We believe in Sente Ye Kikazi. We believe in GRIT.
Today, we’re asking you to make a gift to Street Business School to show that you believe in GRIT, too.
Thank you for your generosity and belief in our work,
Devin Hibbard Barbara Larson
