The Power of Community-Based Training: How John is Transforming Lives
What happens when a dedicated social worker steps into the world of entrepreneurship? For John Walusimbi of Uganda, the answer is transformative change—both for himself and the communities he serves.
Like all great journeys, it begins with bend in the road…
Before joining Street Business School (SBS), John worked as a youth coordinator, addressing issues like youth violence in his community. His path took an unexpected turn when he discovered SBS’s Community-Based Trainer (CBT) program. “I heard about the job advertisement from local leaders and was immediately interested. It involved implementing community projects—something I’ve always been passionate about.”
And continues with learning…
As a CBT, John received comprehensive training from SBS to deliver entrepreneurship education to fellow community members. This experience revealed a critical insight: while many had promising ideas and skills, they were often held back by fear, low confidence, and limited understanding of basic business principles.
And applying those learnings…
Starting Small:“Her husband initially refused to let her attend the training. After joining, she started selling bananas with just 4,000 shillings ($1.08). Today, she’s a major supplier to one of Kampala’s premier hotels. She went from nothing to something, and I’m so proud of her transformation.”
Money Management: “No matter how much you earn, if you don’t know how to manage it, you’ll never reach your goals.”
And walking the walk…
John’s work as a CBT not only impacts those he trained but also inspired his own entrepreneurial journey. Applying the training’s lessons, John launched two successful businesses: a chapatti stall and a beverage shop. His daily profits now reach 10,000 shillings ($2.70) from the chapatti stall and 120,000 shillings ($32.43) from the beverage shop.
“I apply everything I learned from the SBS training in my own businesses,” John shares proudly. His success has enabled tangible achievements, including purchasing a new motorcycle—a significant milestone in Uganda.
John’s impact extends beyond business metrics. As a social worker turned entrepreneur, he finds deep fulfillment in teaching and empowering others. During home visits, he often encounters a powerful full-circle moment: meeting the children of people he previously helped as a social worker, now helping a new generation develop valuable skills.
And the adventure continues…
John’s journey exemplifies the powerful combination of passion, purpose, and practical knowledge. His work with SBS has created a ripple effect of empowerment—transforming not only his own life but countless others in his community. “Life is looking bright!”
Through his role as an SBS Community-Based Trainer, John proves that when people receive the right tools and opportunities, they can create lasting change that spans generations.
