From $27 to Small Business Success: Jamada Kiwuka Kwaba’s Inspiring Entrepreneurial Journey
What can you achieve with just $27?
For 52-year-old Jamada Kiwuka Kwaba, that modest sum marked the start of an incredible transformation – catapulting him from a struggling farmer to a thriving small business owner.
Before this life-changing moment, Jamada’s days were spent tending to his family farm, growing food primarily for his own household. “I was farming and riding a boda-boda, but I had to stop because the cold was affecting my health.” Times were hard, but everything changed when Jamada heard about the community-based training (CBT) program offered by Street Business School.
Energized by the prospect of learning how to start and grow a business, Jamada eagerly dove into the lessons. One module stood out as a particular game-changer: bookkeeping. “It was my favorite topic because it taught me how to properly manage money. I learned essential skills like planning and saving – things I had never done before.”
Armed with this newfound financial know-how, Jamada decided to sell some of his farm produce, earning just enough to rent a small space and launch his own salon. Though his profits started at $2.71 a day, this small step has had a huge impact on his life.
Jamada is quick to credit the supportive SBS coaches for their practical, easy-to-understand guidance. “The coaches explained everything in a way that made sense, and having a local trainer made it easy to get help even outside of sessions.”
The ripple effects of Jamada’s entrepreneurial journey have been felt throughout his entire community. “Many people who had no idea about running a business are now working for themselves. Even those who already had businesses have seen improvements and expansions,” he notes with pride.
Looking ahead, Jamada dreams of expanding his salon even further, perhaps adding a fridge to start selling cold beverages. His growing income is not only helping him care for his own children, but also supporting the education of his grandchildren.
“Life is so much better now. I can see my savings growing, and my future looks brighter every day.”
