Leadership Transition at Street Business School

I want to share an update with our Street Business School (SBS) community. After two years with SBS and in consultation with the SBS Board of Directors, we have decided to end my contract as CEO of Street Business School in February 2025. I will transition back to the private sector and leave SBS in the capable hands of our Chief Operating Officer, Evan Cauble-Johnson, and our Chief Impact Officer, Chris Harper. This decision was made in alignment with the SBS Board and staff as we shift our focus from a focus on strategy to local implementation.

Many of you already know Evan, our COO for over three years. Chris, a co-author of the SBS training program, was instrumental in establishing SBS as a standalone organization out of our roots as a program of BeadforLife more than a decade ago. They will be supported by Interim Country Director Rachael Nalukwago, another co-author of the training program and the leader of our Uganda-based team. Together, this interim leadership team is fully aligned with SBS’s mission and strategic direction, ensuring uninterrupted progress on our initiatives.

I am proud to be leaving Street Business School with a strategy and team that is now launching three new projects in Uganda in the coming months, training thousands of women. With recent threats to global institutional funding, the empowerment of local entrepreneurs through support from individual donors has never been more crucial. I know that SBS will continue to thrive even in these times of reduced institutional funding if it can count on supporters like many of you.

Also looking ahead, we are thrilled to announce a continued pro-bono partnership with Rippleworks, marking our second collaboration with their expert consultants. Over the next several months, the SBS team will work together to evaluate the optimal organizational structure. I believe this project will help us identify and cultivate the qualities needed to efficiently guide SBS into its next chapter. The search for a new CEO will begin after this initiative is completed in early summer.

Thank you for including me in the SBS journey and for your continued support. I leave the organization with great appreciation for its mission and great expectations for its future.

Warm regards,
Deepti Mathews
